Where to Find Your Perfect Props

The props you choose to make and serve your recipes on film are an awesome way to communicate your brand’s values and personality to your audience. After hours of prop-hunting for our own studio and clients, we’ve compiled a list of some of our top recommended locations to start your search for the perfect prop.

The Basics of Food Video Props

The first round of props required for every video are the basics, the standards, the ones you’d like to be uniform or easily replaceable if they break. This category might include your whisk, measuring cups and spoons, mixing bowls, or chef’s knife.

What ends up falling in this group for you is entirely preferential, but if you are on the lookout for something that doesn’t need to be particularly rare, it’s nice to have some accessible, easily searchable stores on your short list. The bonus of these spots is that they often offer quick shipping so you can have your prop on hand if you are working on a time crunch. The downside is that everyone else has access to the same sites, so you probably won’t find your signature pieces here.

A few of our favorite spots to search for basic props are:

Where to Find Unique Props

The next round of props are the ones that you want to be a touch more intentional, more “you”. These are often serving pieces, special ingredient and pinch bowls, or the props that make your readers inevitably ask, “Where’d you find that?!”.

These props are more unique, therefore more fun to use and more communicative about your personality. However, they may be more of an investment, you might find they only work for certain recipes, or you might want to rotate them more frequently to keep them fresh. Also keep in mind that the types of stores that sell these items often rotate stock, so the pieces might not be available in the future if they need to be replaced.

Where to Find One-Of-A-Kind Props

The last category is for those items that truly deliver charm and set the tone for your videos. If you really want to find some gems, I’d highly recommend wandering the aisles of your local vintage or thrift store. It’s more of a time investment since you never know what’s going to turn up, but we have found some of our favorite (and cheapest) props by shopping used.

Etsy is also a great place to find those one-of-a-kind items that will really show off your brand’s preferences. Just be sure to give yourself time before the shoot to track down the perfect piece and have it shipped to you, these items will arrive from all over the world!
