My Customized Workspace for Editing in Premiere Pro

Speeding Up Your Editing Workflow

Looking to speed up your editing workflow? If you edit your videos in Premiere Pro, customizing your workspace is a small change that can go a long way to increase your efficiency and smooth out your process.

Understanding Adobe Premiere’s Workspaces

What is a workspace? In Premiere Pro, your workspace is the layout of panels where you interface with your project. You can easily change the placement of any panel to fit your preferences and needs, then save the arrangement to make it accessible every time you edit.

Premiere sets you up with some default layouts which you’ll find along the top of your window (labeled “Learning”, “Assembly”, “Editing”, etc.). These are great starting points, but once you dive into your editing process, you’ll find there are some panels you use ALL the time, and some you never reference at all. So let’s dive in and set up your own, customized workspace!

How to Set Up a Customized Workspace

We’ll begin by finding the panels you want available in your layout. Head up to the “Window” tab to find a list of all possible panels, select the one you want, and the panel is added to your workspace. Now you can easily rearrange it by clicking the panel title and dragging it around your layout.

As you drag the panel, you’ll see the possible placements highlighted in blue. Pick the placement you feel will fit best for your process, then drop the panel in that location. If you no longer want a panel in your workspace, click the menu beside the panel title and select “Close Panel”.

With your workspace organized exactly how you’d like it, you’ll want to save it to be easily accessible in the future. Head up to the “Window” tab, navigate to “Workspaces”, and select “Save as New Workspace”. If you make any changes to your layout, save them by selecting “Save Changes to this Workspace”.

My Preferred Workspace

Every member of our team has their own workspace, adapted to their personal preferences and workflow. Below is a screenshot of my current workspace, though it is constantly changing as I find new ways to speed up my process. Since I spend a lot of time working with the storyline of the video, the Program Monitor and Timeline panels are placed front and center.

I like having quick access to the Project panel, along with my Effects and Effect Controls to the left. Below is my Essential Graphics for adding text, then my Tools near my Timeline, and to the right I keep access to Lumetri Color for any adjustments I’d like to make along the way.

Just like the Premiere default layouts, feel free to use my workspace as a starting place, then make the changes that work best for you! For more information about workspaces, check out this guide from Adobe
